This is so much fun. But I think its a love it or hate it kind of book and I love it. The little Avengers and X-Men are competing to get the new kids at school to attend a party at each of their clubhouses. The new kids sit on a hill with popcorn watching the crazy battle below. If you like this then you really should be reading Skottie Young’s I Hate Fairyland series from Image Comics.
Crossbones is instructed by Doom to put together a group to go into the Deadlands and confirm that Red Skull is dead. Most of the group is killed by Zombies but Magneto is rescued by Red Skull.

Last days are here and Black Widow is sent on one last mission to make a difference. I have read the Black Widow series and it’s not really been holding my interest. I read it because it’s there on the app but it’s not one that I would purchase.
The last few issues of the Punisher series. I haven’t been reading the previous 18 issues so I’m not too familiar with the storyline. I read this and it can be skipped if you are just following the Secret Wars but if you want to see how Frank Castle handles the incursion this is a must. I’ll be binge reading the entire series before the next season of Daredevil comes onto Netflix.
Steve Rogers is in Greenland with a dinosaur looking for Bucky, he is helped by a Hulk.

Wow!! 17 new Secret Wars titles were added to the Marvel Unlimited app this week. That’s a lot of comics to read but great value for money. If fact, buying them individually would have been around the same price as the annual subscription cost of the app.
I’m trying really hard to like this but I just can’t get into it. The story pits Tony Stark against his brother Arno, in a region where armor has to be worn to survive. The story features a murder investigation and corporate espionage. I’m interested to see where the story goes and I really hope there are going to be some twists and turns in the tale before it ends.
This one I liked. Great characters who play well off each other. The tension builds as the kids try and make it to their final exam. Love the twist at the end. Valeria makes a great villain.
This has to be my number one. It was so strikingly different from all the other Book of Death covers, which were very dark. Marguerite Sauvage is rapidly becoming my favorite comic book artist. I can’t wait to see here work in the Valiant series Faith next year.
The following 9 Secret Wars titles were added to the app this week.
Super-heroes are going missing or being killed and Peter Parker is trying to pick up the slack in their absence. This is putting pressure on his marriage to MJ. The Avengers call him to help them look into the disappearances. When there is a break out at Ryker’s Island prison Peter rushes home. He is too late Venom is there and has MJ and the baby. Spider-Man and Venom fight and Spider-Man thinks he has killed Venom. While this is happening we see the Avengers fighting a villain calling himself Regent. Regent has absorbed all the X-men’s powers and is now trying to take the Avengers. We then see Peter about 5 years later trying to lead a normal life. Signs in the background show that Regent is running the city.
Eight new Secret Wars related titles were added to the Marvel Unlimited App this week.
The Infinity Gauntlet was one of my favorites of the week. Set in a part of Battleworld that has been decimated by huge bugs. A handful of survivors live amongst the ruins. The family introduced in this book consists of a father his two young children and their grandfather. The star of the book is the daughter Anwen. Their mother left them to join the Nova Corps and she resents it. The family is attacked by bugs and Anwen finds an Infinity Gem. The mother finally returns as a Nova Corps member. Throughout the issue there has been a figure watching from the shadows, he is revealed to be Thanos, that’s not really a big spoiler as he is pictured on the cover of the comic. This is one of the best Secret Wars titles that I’ve read so far. The artwork and story are really good and I’m looking forward to more.
I really wasn’t expecting much from this book. M.O.D.O.K. isn’t a character I know much about and I wasn’t sure that he would be worthy of his own book, but this was a lot of fun. It’s bright and colorful and fast paced. The ending made me want to read more.
This next book is very different from everything else out this week. From the artwork to the actual story, this one is darker and grittier than anything else we’ve seen so far from Secret Wars and it’s tie-in’s. At first glance I thought the art style was going to a distraction from the story but once I was a few pages in it all made sense. The use of color and tone really helps the story. There are some pages that rely entirely on the art as there is no text at all and it works really well.
A region of the Battleworld that is from the future. The same world as the Spider-Man 2099 series portrayed. This time though we get to see the Avengers of the future. In this issue we are introduced to future versions of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Hercules. The Avengers work for a corporation called Alchemax, the future Vision predicts danger from The Defenders. It’s going to be really fun to see this future story play out.
Another Secret Wars title that I wasn’t sure about. I have to confess that before this I had never heard of the Phantom Eagle character and having looked around on the internet for information it wasn’t really surprising. Karl Kaufman is a somewhat obscure character that debuted in Marvel Comics in 1968. Not much has been seen of him since so he may seem an odd choice for a book where he is the star. That’s the beauty of the Secret Wars event. The creators at Marvel have been given the opportunity to experiment which characters and stories and no necessarily affect the rest of the Marvel Universe. Where Monster’s dwell is set in a region of Battleworld that look at lot like the WW1 era on earth. The major difference being that there are dinosaurs here. The book was a lot of fun, tons of humor and looks like going forward it isn’t going to take itself too seriously. It all seems very removed from the other Battleworld books but maybe things will tie in a little in future issues.
This was probably my least favorite of the week. I wanted to like it, I love the X-Men, the story seemed intriguing and the artwork looked good but the dialog just didn’t seem to flow. The humor felt a little forced and unnecessary. I may go back and read the original Inferno event on the app. Maybe then I will have a greater appreciation for what this book offers.
I love the Inhumans so this was one I was eager to read. The action starts out in Greenland (the land of the Hulks) a resistance group called the Voice Unheard is trying to deliver a serum that can cure the Hulks. Thor’s arrive and capture a member of the Voice Unheard (a ghost rider called G-man), he is delivered to Medusa who is instructed by Doom to find out what the group is planning. G-man dies during interrogation they do find out the name of a place called The Quiet Room. Medusa sends Auran to The Quiet Room to get information. The Quiet room is a bar in Grand Central Station, when Auran arrives she is greeted by a man who introduces himself as Blackagar and is expecting her. I wasn’t disappointed, this was as good as I hoped it would be. Great artwork, once again and truly compelling story telling. The ending was unexpected and left me wanting more.
This book comprises of two short stories from different parts of the Battleworld. The issue we seem some of King James’ England and Egyptia. Lady Kate of Bishop is a Robin Hood style bandit being hunted by Sheriff Punisher and in Egyptia and group of mutants are planning to overthrow a god. The first tale is a lot of fun and the Kate of Bishop character is going to be featured in the Secret Wars title Siege. The second story is a lot darker featuring werewolves and mutants being riped apart, the ending was bold and a little unexpected. If this is what the Journal series is going to be then it’s something to look forward to.

This week we got everything that was expected in week 3, so the first couple of weeks on the Marvel app were a bit different to the print release but going forward hopefully the same group of titles will be added to the app that were originally released together in the same week.
This week 8 new Secret Wars titles were added.
Odin tries to convince the congress of worlds that the end is coming, they do not believe him. ‘King Loki’ or evil Loki from the future, eavesdrops on Odin talking to Freyja and now is plotting to try and stay alive. Back on Asgard Freyja takes Odin to show him a magical weapon that may help them beat the incursions. Heimdall show the Asgardians that Loki is coming with the forces of Hel, he is riding Jormungandr the World Serpant. Odin and Freyja are there with weapons to fight Loki.
This issue contains two different stories about different regions of the Battleworld.
Frank Castle, The Punisher has Dr. Strange’s soul attached to him. He is being hunted by the Infernal Four (created when, a Hulk, a Ghost Rider, a Wolverine and a Spider-man where trapped in the Demonic Domain). Punisher has been crossing borders and now Doom wants him captured alive. Punisher kills himself and takes out everyone but Wolverine. Dr. Strange’s soul attaches itself to Wolverine and they head back to Inferno.
This story is set in a top secret AIM laboratory in The Warzone. M.O.D.O.K. has transported other versions of himself to the lab, his plan is to take over from Doom and have each version of himself run different part of Battleworld. The different M.O.D.O.K.’s fight and the original decided to send them back. Baby M.O.D.O.K. destroys the transporter and a battle erupts. Two Thors arrive, having been sent to the lab by Sheriff Strange, they find the M.O.D.O.K. either dead or injured, they have destroyed the lab and each other.
Set in Battleworld Manhattan. Heroes from the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Marvel Universe are at odds and trying to figure out how they ended up where they are. The book begins with a huge superhero battle about to begin and then flashes back to tell us the story of how they ended up fighting each other.
Set in the Battleworld region known as K’un Lun. A region run by a benevolent Emperor Zheng Zu. The Emperor is selected in the 13 chambers through trail by combat. The 13 chambers are about to open up for the latest trial. Zheng Zu’s son Shang-Chi has come out of hiding after being accused of murdering Lord Tuan. Emperor Zu sends for Laughing Skull and Red Sai to hunt Shang-Chi.
All the different Spiders are back. They are in Battleworld Manhattan and while everyone else on Battleworld has no memory of the incursion or their previous lives, their spider-senses are telling them that something is not right on this world. There is also a bonus Spider-Ham story.
There is a whole area of Battleworld that is separated from the rest by a huge ocean. The region is called Greenland and it’s entire population has been exposed to gamma radiation. Captain America is sent there on a mission by Doom to eliminate the Red King in Greenland. He is looking for Bucky who is thought to be dead, Sheriff Strange tells him that Bucky is being held by the Red King. The second half of the issue is a back story telling the origin of the Planet of the Hulks and how Greenland became what it is.
This book is not set on Battleworld. Instead it is Deadpool telling the story of the first Marvel Secret Wars event that took place in the 80’s. While Deadpool did not appear in the comics until the 90’s. He retells the original story and puts himself in it. This is a fun book but only required Secret Wars reading if you are a big Deadpool fan.
A free issue that was given away on Free Comic Book day. It has some brief backstory about the making of Reed Richards raft.
Expected next week on the app
