Secret Wars Week 7

Wow!! 17 new Secret Wars titles were added to the Marvel Unlimited app this week.  That’s a lot of comics to read but great value for money.  If fact, buying them individually would have been around the same price as the annual subscription cost of the app.

Armor Wars #2

I’m trying really hard to like this but I just can’t get into it.  The story pits Tony Stark against his brother Arno, in a region where armor has to be worn to survive.  The story features a murder investigation and corporate espionage.  I’m interested to see where the story goes and I really hope there are going to be some twists and turns in the tale before it ends.

Runaways #1

This one I liked.  Great characters who play well off each other.  The tension builds as the kids try and make it to their final exam.  Love the twist at the end.  Valeria makes a great villain.

Secret Wars Week 6

The following 9 Secret Wars titles were added to the app this week.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1

Super-heroes are going missing or being killed and Peter Parker is trying to pick up the slack in their absence.  This is putting pressure on his marriage to MJ.  The Avengers call him to help them look into the disappearances.  When there is a break out at Ryker’s Island prison Peter rushes home.  He is too late Venom is there and has MJ and the baby.  Spider-Man and Venom fight and Spider-Man thinks he has killed Venom.  While this is happening we see the Avengers fighting a villain calling himself Regent. Regent has absorbed all the X-men’s powers and is now trying to take the Avengers. We then see Peter about 5 years later trying to lead a normal life.  Signs in the background show that Regent is running the city.

Secret Wars Week 5

Eight new Secret Wars related titles were added to the Marvel Unlimited App this week.

The Infinity Gauntlet #1

The Infinity Gauntlet was one of my favorites of the week.  Set in a part of Battleworld that has been decimated by huge bugs.  A handful of survivors live amongst the ruins.   The family introduced in this book consists of a father his two young children and their grandfather.  The star of the book is the daughter Anwen.  Their mother left them to join the Nova Corps and she resents it.  The family is attacked by bugs and Anwen finds an Infinity Gem.  The mother finally returns as a Nova Corps member.  Throughout the issue there has been a figure watching from the shadows, he is revealed to be Thanos, that’s not really a big spoiler as he is pictured on the cover of the comic.   This is one of the best Secret Wars titles that I’ve read so far.  The artwork and story are really good and I’m looking forward to more.

M.O.D.O.K. Assassin #1

I really wasn’t expecting much from this book.  M.O.D.O.K. isn’t a character I know much about and I wasn’t sure that he would be worthy of his own book, but this was a lot of fun.  It’s bright and colorful and fast paced.  The ending made me want to read more.

Old Man Logan #1

This next book is very different from everything else out this week.  From the artwork to the actual story, this one is darker and grittier than anything else we’ve seen so far from Secret Wars and it’s tie-in’s.   At first glance I thought the art style was going to a distraction from the story but once I was a few pages in it all made sense.  The use of color and tone really helps the story.  There are some pages that rely entirely on the art as there is no text at all and it works really well.

Secret Wars 2099 #1

A region of the Battleworld that is from the future.  The same world as the Spider-Man 2099 series portrayed.  This time though we get to see the Avengers of the future.  In this issue we are introduced to future versions of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Hercules.   The Avengers work for a corporation called Alchemax, the future Vision predicts danger from The Defenders.  It’s going to be really fun to see this future story play out.

Where Monsters Dwell #1

Another Secret Wars title that I wasn’t sure about.  I have to confess that before this I had never heard of the Phantom Eagle character and having looked around on the internet for information it wasn’t really surprising.  Karl Kaufman is a somewhat obscure character that debuted in Marvel Comics in 1968.  Not much has been seen of him since so he may seem an odd choice for a book where he is the star.  That’s the beauty of the Secret Wars event.  The creators at Marvel have been given the opportunity to experiment which characters and stories and no necessarily affect the rest of the Marvel Universe.  Where Monster’s dwell is set in a region of Battleworld that look at lot like the WW1 era on earth.  The major difference being that there are dinosaurs here.  The book was a lot of fun, tons of humor and looks like going forward it isn’t going to take itself too seriously.  It all seems very removed from the other Battleworld books but maybe things will tie in a little in future issues.

Inferno #1

This was probably my least favorite of the week.  I wanted to like it, I love the X-Men, the story seemed intriguing and the artwork looked good but the dialog just didn’t seem to flow.  The humor felt a little forced and unnecessary.  I may go back and read the original Inferno event on the app.  Maybe then I will have a greater appreciation for what this book offers.

Inhumans: Attila Rising #1

I love the Inhumans so this was one I was eager to read.  The action starts out in Greenland (the land of the Hulks) a resistance group called the Voice Unheard is trying to deliver a serum that can cure the Hulks.  Thor’s arrive and capture a member of the Voice Unheard (a ghost rider called G-man), he is delivered to Medusa who is instructed by Doom to find out what the group is planning.  G-man dies during interrogation they do find out the name of a place called The Quiet Room.  Medusa sends Auran to The Quiet Room to get information.  The Quiet room is a bar in Grand Central Station, when Auran arrives she is greeted by a man who introduces himself as Blackagar and is expecting her.   I wasn’t disappointed, this was as good as I hoped it would be.  Great artwork, once again and truly compelling story telling.   The ending was unexpected and left me wanting more.

Secret Wars: Journal #1

This book comprises of two short stories from different parts of the Battleworld.   The issue we seem some of King James’ England and Egyptia.  Lady Kate of Bishop is a Robin Hood style bandit being hunted by Sheriff Punisher and in Egyptia and group of mutants are planning to overthrow a god.   The first tale is a lot of fun and the Kate of Bishop character is going to be featured in the Secret Wars title Siege.  The second story is a lot darker featuring werewolves and mutants being riped apart, the ending was bold and a little unexpected.  If this is what the Journal series is going to be then it’s something to look forward to.

Secret Wars – Week One

Secret Wars #1 Marvel Comics

Marvel’s major comic book event has started to show up on the Marvel Unlimited app this week.  I’ve been reading the main book but have been waiting on the app for most of the other issues that surround the event.  Most people’s budget and storage space just couldn’t support reading everything that is associated with Secret Wars as it encompasses virtually every non Star Wars Marvel title that has been released since May 2015 and that’s close to 200 issues and $800.   So for this event the $69 per year for the app is a really good deal.

This week Secret Wars #1 showed up on the app.

If you haven’t been reading Avengers and New Avengers (all issue are on the app) then there is a little back story that you may need to know before diving into Secret Wars.  If you are able I would recommend reading the “Time Runs Out” issues of both series.  Avengers #35 – #44 and New Avengers #24 – #33.  The storyline in these issues involves universes colliding, “incursions” and the Avengers working to find a way to stop it.  Everything they try fails and it comes down to the final two universes.  Secret Wars #1 begins with the collision of the Marvel 616 Universe and the Ultimate 1610 Marvel Universe and both are destroyed.  The aftermath of the destruction combines pieces of both universes and creates the “Battleworld”

The first issue of Secret Wars may not be the best place for new readers to jump into the Marvel Universe.  This is more like the conclusion of things for those who have been reading the comics for years.  New readers may want to be heading to their local comic book stores over the next few weeks to pick up the #1 issues that are coming out now that the Secret Wars event is winding down.

The Prelude to Secret Wars is available to buy from Amazon or your local comic book store now.

It’s about the same price as purchasing 17 comics, and I know I read way more than that in a month using the app.  Only a couple more months and Secret Wars will start being added!!!!
