It looks like the Marvel Unlimited app isn’t going to be following the print release schedule for Secret Wars. This week we only got Secret Wars #2 and A-Force #1. Maybe next week we’ll see a huge upload to the app of the 7 missed this week and the 8 that were released in week 4.
I was happy to see this one added this week. After the world destroying events of Secret Wars #1 we now get to see the new world that has been formed. The book begins with a man taking a hammer and becoming one of many Thors who follow the rule of Doom who is the God and ruler of the new world. The Thors are Dooms police, keeping order over many houses. We see familiar Marvel characters both hero and villain running these houses which are all ruled by Doom. Dr. Strange is the Sheriff and the right hand of Doom. we see him overseeing a dispute. One of the men is exiled outside of the kingdoms to the Deadlands where he fights monsters to survive. While this dispute is being resolved by Doom a ship is discovered beneath he earth, it pre-dates the creation of the world and Dr. Strange orders it quarantined by the Thors. While they are there the ship opens and Thanos and the Cabal are revealed to be inside, they stole the designs for Reed Richards raft and have survived the incursion. They are told the name of the world they are on is Battleworld.
The other book released this week is A-Force. This takes place on a island called Arcadia (35 on the map above). The island is inhabited by female heroes and villains and they are all led by She-Hulk. Major characters in this issue are Captain Marvel, Dazzler, Loki, Sister Grimm, Medusa and Ms. America. During a fight with a prehistoric shark, Ms. America throws the shark out of Battleworld. This violates Dooms law and a Thor comes to arrest her. She-Hulk enlists the help of Namor to find where the shark came from. A mysterious figure falls from the sky and Sister Grimm finds her. This is one of my favorite Secret Wars tie-ins. It’s great to see a book with a ton of Girl Power.
Hopefully on the app next week we’ll see the missing titles from week 2 along with the following.
22 new books from Marvel this week so there is probably something here for everyone. Ultimates and Illuminati look interesting and Wolverine fans get a all-new all-female Wolverine as X-23 takes over the role. We also get to see the penultimate Secret Wars #7.
This week the Marvel Unlimited app added Magneto #18 and Captain America & The Mighty Avengers #8. There was no Secret Wars #2 although it was originally released in the second week. Hopefully it will show up on the app next week.
Magneto has been struggling with how he has lived and what his legacy will be. He has fought for mutants and now has to fight for everyone if the world is going to survive. He believes that he can do what is needed as he is willing to destroy other worlds in order to save his world and the mutants on it. His drive and conviction becomes stronger when sentinels arrive from the earth that is colliding with his.
Steve Rogers calls a meeting of the Mighty Avengers to tell them about the incursions and explain that he and the illuminati have known about them for some time. The Mighty Avengers are outraged that something so important would be kept from the world and the other superheroes that could have helped come up with a solution.
Marvel’s major comic book event has started to show up on the Marvel Unlimited app this week. I’ve been reading the main book but have been waiting on the app for most of the other issues that surround the event. Most people’s budget and storage space just couldn’t support reading everything that is associated with Secret Wars as it encompasses virtually every non Star Wars Marvel title that has been released since May 2015 and that’s close to 200 issues and $800. So for this event the $69 per year for the app is a really good deal.
This week Secret Wars #1 showed up on the app.
If you haven’t been reading Avengers and New Avengers (all issue are on the app) then there is a little back story that you may need to know before diving into Secret Wars. If you are able I would recommend reading the “Time Runs Out” issues of both series. Avengers #35 – #44 and New Avengers #24 – #33. The storyline in these issues involves universes colliding, “incursions” and the Avengers working to find a way to stop it. Everything they try fails and it comes down to the final two universes. Secret Wars #1 begins with the collision of the Marvel 616 Universe and the Ultimate 1610 Marvel Universe and both are destroyed. The aftermath of the destruction combines pieces of both universes and creates the “Battleworld”
The first issue of Secret Wars may not be the best place for new readers to jump into the Marvel Universe. This is more like the conclusion of things for those who have been reading the comics for years. New readers may want to be heading to their local comic book stores over the next few weeks to pick up the #1 issues that are coming out now that the Secret Wars event is winding down.
The Prelude to Secret Wars is available to buy from Amazon or your local comic book store now.
A couple of #1’s and a couple of guide books. I might take a look at the Secret Wars handbook. Anything that can make all the multiverse events simpler for the more casual Marvel reader would be great.
Angela: Queen of Hel #1
Captain America: Sam Wilson #2
Deadpool vs Thanos #4
Guidebook Marvel Cinematic Universe: Iron Man
House of M #4
Howling Commandos of SHIELD #1
Kanan – The Last Padawan #7

Secret Wars Official Handbook of Marvel Multiverse #1
More #1’s from Marvel this week as things continue to reboot as a result of the Secret Wars event. My pick from the bunch this week is the final issue of Shattered Empire. I love this book and it’s disappointing that it was such a short series. Hopefully Shara and Kes will get their own book sometime soon.
This limited series is one of the best books around right now. The fact that it’s a limited series is possibly the only negative thing I have to say about it this week. The art work by Marco Checchetto is just stunning.
Issue #3 has some great girl power moments. Shara, Leia and Queen Soruna all step up to save Naboo. I’m slightly disappointed that they needed Lando and his fleet to finish off the Star Destroyer. It would have been nice to see the ladies take care of it by themselves, although it might have been a little unrealistic that 3 outdated Naboo ships could have taken out the Destroyer alone.
The interaction between Han Solo and Chewbacca is great, the gun fights and action in those scenes is also beautifully drawn. The women really do steal the show this week though.
The final issue is out next week. I’m really hoping that the popularity of this book leads to Shara and Kes getting their own monthly book.
It’s mostly #1’s from Marvel this week. Everything is starting over after Secret Wars so it’s a great opportunity to get started on reading some new titles and know that you aren’t jumping in mid story.
Lots from Marvel this week, including a bunch of #1’s. We should be getting Secret Wars #6 this week, but with the release dates constantly moving who knows. The list below is taken from Marvel’s website. Comixology has a slightly different list, I guess we’ll find out tomorrow what does and doesn’t come out
